Since I’m going to start running a series of blogs on technology and SEO, I thought I would post a few quick tricks on basic things that can help increase your search engine ranking. If you are already doing these then GOOD FOR YOU but if not you might want to make a few changes to your site that will not only help you with Big G but could also improve your sites overall appearance.
#1: Change your titles to reflect your most desired keywords / keyphrases!
Page titles are muy importante. Your page title should focus on THE keyword / keyphrase that you are going after.
#2: Use header tags (i.e. h1, h2 & h3) to emphasize keywords / keyphrases!
H1 tags should mirror your title. H2’s and H3’s should reflect your secondary keywords / keyphrases. Be careful not to overdo it and MAKE SURE THAT THE HEADER TAGS MAKE SENSE! You don’t want people visiting your site and leaving because your site looks like flea market scraps as a result of keywords that don’t make sense.
#3: Use h2 and h3 tags to emphasize secondary keywords!
I’ve already mentioned this so I don’t suppose it’s really a big deal to go over it again.
#4: C3PO and SEO!
Make sure you have and USE a robots.txt file! This will tell bots to crawl or NOT crawl specific directories and files on your site. Make sure you “disallow” administration directories, etc…
#5: Who’s your favorite?
Make sure you have a favicon file uploaded to your image gallery. Favicons are a 16×16 (pixel) graphic that goes next to the URL (the www.whatever.com) section of your browser. On my site, it’s me with the crazy blue hair. It’s not imperative though some have suggested that having a favicon can give you a competitive advantage when it comes to SEO mastification. Plus, it’s just really cool!
The big hairy deal with favicon’s is that most graphics programs cannot instantly create one though there are some sites that you can go to and create one. I made mine in photoshop but not before I downloaded this plugin from Telegraphics. Photoshop does not have the plugin on its own.
Once you’ve created the favicon, you can upload it to your images gallery and then add the following code inside your head and /head tags.
<LINK REL=”SHORTCUT ICON” HREF=”http://www.yoursite.com/images/favicon.ico”>
You just want to make sure that the code points directly to the favicon.ico image.
Below is my favicon file with the image embedded in this blog.
Happy Optimizing!
